MACADAMIA NUTS

Macadamia nuts originate from macadamia (Macadamia) trees belonging to the silverside family (Proteaceae). Plants of the genus Macadamia are mainly grown in Australia, South Africa, Kenya and the USA. Macadamia nuts mainly provide B vitamins such as thiamine (vitamin B1), niacin (vitamin B3), vitamin B6. Macadamia nuts also contain small amounts of phytosterols (plant sterols), mainly in the form of beta-sitosterol (108 mg/100 g. Phytosterols have blood cholesterol-lowering properties. However, the level of sterols in nuts is too low to produce this effect. The effectiveness of phytosterols is observed at 1-3 g/day (i.e. 1000-3000 mg). Despite this, there are other compounds in macadamia nuts that may have a cholesterol-lowering effect. The glycaemic index value of macadamia nuts is 10 (GI = 10). This means that macadamia nuts are a low-GI product. At the same time, macadamia nuts have a low glycaemic load (LB), whose value (for 1 handful = 40 g) is 0.55 (LB = 0.55).
